NEWS 2009

Ona Network Victoria Australia report for 2008.

The Dodoma Cataract Project.
2008 has been a successful year for the DCP. Frank Magupa, our Executive Director, has been in Tanzania since mid-year and reported that 112 villagers had their sight restored through surgery delivered at the cataract camp in July. Our thanks to Alcon Australia whose continuing support contributed to the success of the July cataract project.
Fundraising activities.
We had stalls at Sydney Road Street Party in February, the Glenferrie Road Street Festival in April, the Emerge Festival in Fitzroy in June, and at Preston Market pre Christmas 2007. Funds raised at these events together with donations meant that Ona Network Victoria was able to provide $4,700 to support the Dodoma Cataract Project. Many thanks to all who contributed in many ways to this outcome. Please let me know if there is an event that you would like to be involved in and we will provide our display and equipment.
Collection of glasses.
Our thanks to Laura Grattidge and Rushan Perera at the Optometrists Association Australia (Victorian Division) for the ten cartons of glasses collected by members and to Boroondara Lions who sort, clean and repair the glasses before sending them to Tanzania. This activity links Ona Network Victoria to the Lions Eyeglasses Recycling Centre (LERC) of Brisbane which has recycled over 25,000 pairs of glasses over many years and is a major supporter of Ona Network’s community optometry program in Tanzania.
Surgical supplies.
Thanks to Robyn Oldham and the Victoria Parade Surgery Centre for their generous donations of 10 boxes of surgical supplies that were sent to Tanzania in mid year with Frank.
Thanks again to everyone for their continuing interest and support.
Secretary, Ona Network Victoria
